Description

Diabetes Type 1 is when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. It is caused by the immune system killing beta cells in the pancreas.

US Prevalence: 832,000 to 1,088,000 [Menke 2013]

Typical Age of onset

15-39 but can occur at any age

Symptoms

  • Increased thirst (polydipsia)

  • Frequent urination (polyuria)

  • Bed-wetting in children who previously didn't wet the bed during the night

  • Extreme hunger (polyphagia)

  • Unintended weight loss

  • Irritability and other mood changes

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Blurred vision
