My mother had Hashimoto’s – what’s the chance I will have an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto’s disease, is the most common autoimmune disease in our registry. According to the All of Us database*, 94 of the 1,603 (5.86%) patients with Celiac disease have mothers with Hashimoto’s. This is seen in other diseases as well—such as alopecia areata, Sjogren’s disease, and suspected autoimmune conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome—in which 4-6% of the patients reported that their mothers have Hashimoto’s. Children of mothers with Hashimotos also suffer from less common autoimmune diseases, including atrophic gastritis, Crohn’s, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, and vitiligo.

The highest number of autoimmune disease patients who have mothers with Hashimoto’s are those diagnosed with Hashimoto’s themselves. Out of 3,504 patients in the All of Us database with Hashimoto’s, 330 (or 9.42%)  reported that their mothers also have Hashimoto’s. These statistics support the view that autoimmune diseases are partially hereditary.

Mothers bear the greatest burden of autoimmune disease. To honor all our Mothers, the Autoimmune Registry is holding a fundraising raffle to give away 3 $150 Massage Envy gift cards. To enter, donate $10 or more to the Autoimmune Registry before the end of today (May 11th). Each entry is $10, so a $100 donation gets you 10 “tickets”.
