What are some ways autoimmune disease patients cope with their diagnosis?
Receiving an autoimmune disease diagnosis can be life-altering since it leads individuals into a challenging journey of managing their symptoms, receiving treatments, and experiencing the emotional toll of living with a chronic condition. Some common coping strategies are setting small but achievable goals, picking up a new hobby, or reaching out to family and friends. Another strategy that tends to be overlooked comes in the form of animals.
A member of our community, Bob Becker, asked us to share his story about his therapy dog, Francesca, who has helped him on his health journey:
It all started when I received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998. In 2020, I started noticing increased balance problems, pain, fatigue, and numbness in my feet. After undergoing multiple exams, I was diagnosed with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, on top of my MS.
After my diagnosis, my wife and I bought a condo in Boise, Idaho to be able to attend my doctor's appointments. Our real estate agent, Marta, invited us over to write up the offer on the condo. During our visit, I met Marta's Norwich terrier and fell in love with the breed. I asked Marta where she got her dog, and she gave me all the information I needed to get one of my own.
The Norwich terrier I adopted is named Francesca. When I'm having a rough time, she somehow senses it. When she is up to her hat full of antics, my physical and mental burdens are relieved more effectively than from any medicine my doctors have prescribed. She brings nothing but positive side effects.
The journey of living with an autoimmune disease can be very challenging. We hope these stories from our registrants can inspire and help others cope with the physical and emotional aspects of their autoimmune diagnosis.
