Latest CAR-T therapy data shows promise in treating Lupus and other autoimmune diseases

Back in June, we discussed how CAR-T therapy may be used to treat various autoimmune diseases such as lupus and myasthenia gravis. Although CAR-T therapy is mainly used to fight cancer, researchers have been able to use this therapy to modify T-cells to attack B-cells that incorrectly produce antibodies that attack their own cells.

At the December 9th meeting of the American Society of Hematology, Dr. Fabian Mueller and his team reported that 15 participants with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM), or systemic sclerosis (SSc) have remained disease-free or nearly so following their CAR-T therapy treatment. Most importantly, all 15 patients completely stopped taking immunosuppressive drugs. While this is a huge step in finding a hypothetical cure for autoimmune diseases, a longer follow-up is necessary.

Please support the Autoimmune Registry by joining our registry or sharing it with a friend who has an autoimmune condition. Together, we can better tackle the underlying causes of all autoimmune diseases.
